Double Helix Tension Mast in the Forest

A tree-inspired tension mast has risen in "the Tuscany of Austria".

This observation tower by Munich office terrain:loenhart&mayr rises over the river Mur in Southern Styria, on the Austrian border with Slovenia, near Bad Radkersburg. It was engineered by the Office for Structural Design in Frankfurt.
It is a double helix tension structure composed of steel and clad with aluminum, by Klaus Loenhart, Director of the Institut für Architektur und Landschaft at Graz University of Technology and his colleague Christoph Mayr.

The supporting structure of the observation tower is designed like a tree. The lower part corresponds with a tree's trunk, while the steel structure of thinned-out tubes represents the more delicate branches up above. Its double spiral staircase boasts 168 steps that raise a visitor to a height of 27 meters. It has another flight going down. The tower sways as one climbs its stairs.

The tower was supported by local donors, whose names are inscribed on a plaque.
