Tensegrity Card Trick

Cards and pack float in this conjurer's application of the art of tensegrity. The magical card structure built by the magician is non-intuitive because the audience is not used to tensegrity. Mike Anderson wrote,

After stumbling over Paul Harris' Principle of Tensegrity, (found in his Art of Astonishment Book), I haven't been able to stop playing with this idea and trying to come up with new ideas on how to use it. This is a picture of what the basic Tensegrity effect is. And no the cards are not glued together. Each card is a single card and you form this gravity defying peice of art right in front of your spectator. I did this for my mother last night along with a few other effects and she stared at this for 20 min, trying to figure it out. Its so devious you have to learn how to do it. You can add items like Drinking straws, rubber bands, anything you can think of to make it even more impossible. But what the pic is is a basic idea of what you can do with the principle. Tensegrity ins't magic per say but does border on the verse of impossibility.

Apparently, Patrick Snowden first popularized this trick. Below, a magician on a Japanese TV show builds this card structure and adds a drinking straw to it.

Tensegrity: Patrick Snowden's strange improbably balanced card sculptures have been pumped up to a new gravity-defying level. Can be done anywhere, surrounded, etc. A true piece of strange that leaves one dangling from the crumbling edge.
