Surfaces as Tension Tendons

Elelvis posted this photo in 2006, a structure where cloth surfaces play the role of tension tendons. Reminds me of Scarr's planar-compression struts in his biotensegrity model of the human cranium. (his paper, here.)

The classic tensegrities, of course, feature struts and tendons as straight lines... Do these models with surfaces instead of lines represent a way forward or a diversion?
