Here's what Alisa had to say about her tutorial: Recently I met up for a day full of fun with my friend and fellow artist Jane LaFazio. We met at Liberty Station; n San Diego and visited Visions Art Museum, took lots of photos, ate a fabulous lunch and exchanged materials to create with. I gave Jane a bag full of painted canvas scraps and Jane gave me a whole bunch of denim and ribbon scraps. I knew right away I would put these scraps to use for a holiday gift tutorial- a set of fiber coasters.

Alisa's Bio: Alisa Burke is a freelance painter and mixed media artist who studied fine art at Portland State University. With a background in painting and printmaking, a desire to explore and push materials, Alisa is always looking for new ways to break the rules and redefine art. She draws inspiration from street art, graffiti, art history and fashion and it is not uncommon to find her digging through the trash in hopes of recycling something unique use in her artwork.

Alisa’s paintings have been exhibited in a variety of galleries and her handmade, painted accessories are carried in a number of boutiques across the country. Her artwork has been featured in publications such as Cloth Paper Scissors, Quilting Arts, Where Women Create, Somerset Studios’ Haute Handbags, Art Doll Quarterly, and the University of San Diego Magazine. In addition to making art, Alisa teaches a variety of workshops nation wide. Alisa appeared as a guest artist on the DIY Network show Craft Lab and book Canvas Remix was released in spring 2008.

Easy-peasy coaster idea

Here's what Carina had to say about her tutorial: This is an idea. I would call it a tutorial, but it is so easy, it can hardly be called that. I had a few smallish scraps of fabric (lightly coated with something so it can be wiped clean.. what do you call it?) that my mum gave me a couple of years ago.

It's very pretty (tiny strawberries!) but the scraps weren't large enough to use for a 'proper' project like a bag or something. But then I had this idea to use it for coasters. Not that we need *that* many coasters, it's just the two of us, after all. However, I'm always afraid that I'm going to set down my glass on the edge of a coaster and it'll tip over and drink will go everywhere (yeah, I should just look when I put down my glass, oh well).

So these coasters help avoid clumsy-ness related spillages as well as use those scraps for something!

Here's what Jessica had to say about her tutorial: Related to yesterday's coaster project, here's a template for making a larger modular felt trivet. No sewing or gluing required. Connect as many pieces as you like to make bigger projects, too--placemats, a runner, or sew two pieces together for a pillow cover.

Here's what Jessica had to say about her tutorial: Modular pieces that fit together make me really happy, and on a recent Google hunt, I found felt rugs here and here made with interlocking shapes. Very cool. So I tried a pared-down pattern for coasters because I'm way too impatient to fit 847,236,780 pieces together to make a rug.

Experimental Cork Trivets, DIY Mid Century Cork Magnets, and Iron On Vinyl Coasters Free Tutorials From Jessica Jones of Jessica Jones

It's always fun to try something new like working with cork or iron-on vinyl. Even creating unusual magnets can be fun. Recycled Paper Flowers, Gift Bags From Newspapers, Gift Bows From Magazine Pages, and Magazine Coaster Free Tutorials From Jessica Jones of Jessica Jones

I just LOVE paper crafts and all the things you can do with paper these days. To say there has been a paper explosion during the last few years would be putting it mildly. When I was a kid (yes, back in the stone age) we used newspaper for crafting purposes.

So, I was happy to see that Jessica Jones of of Jessica Jones had several wonderful tutorials on her How About Orange blog using recycled newspaper and magazine paper to create flowers, make a gift bag, make a gift bow, make magazine coasters,

How to make recycled paper flowers

Here's what Jessica had to say about her tutorial: I learned to make paper flowers a long time ago with directions from a library book. They don't require any adhesive, and there are just four shapes to cut out.

How to make gift bags from newspaper

Here's what Jessica had to say about her tutorial: When I bought something at a store recently, the clerk handed me my purchase in a bag made from a newspaper. I liked it very much and had to make some more—thus today's DIY recycled newspaper project: gift bags made from the Wall Street Journal. You can vary the dimensions, of course, but here's what I used to create a bag that's 5" tall, 4.5" wide, and 3" deep.

Make a gift bow from a magazine page

Here's what Jessica had to say about her tutorial: In gift wrap emergencies when you've got the present but need some wrapping, here's an idea for turning a magazine page into a bow. (There may be better ways to stick this thing together, but I used what I had on hand: staples and adhesive glue dots. Double stick tape should work, too.)
