Video of a tornado destroying a family's home

One of the Illinois tornados last week.
"Here is what my oldest daughter Josie Taylor Wells and I experienced, I am so glad Kerry Gorman Wells and the other girls were out of town when this storm came through. Very thankful we were not injured."
No gore, but difficult to watch for other reasons (the screams of the family in the dark).  Your choice...

World's tallest falling domino structure

From Austrian Domino Art, via Neatorama, where it is noted that five months of preparation and four days of setup went into this stunt. One wonders how many times the 6-meter-tall structure was accidentally toppled during construction.

There should be more stuff like this in the world.

A visual history of nuclear weapons testing

"Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998....

Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen... It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so..."

The temperament of a Labrador

From the Wikipedia entry:
The AKC describes the Labrador's temperament as a kind, pleasant, outgoing and tractable nature. Labradors' sense of smell allows them to home in on almost any scent and follow the path of its origin. They generally stay on the scent until they find it...

Labradors instinctively enjoy holding objects and even hands or arms in their mouths, which they can do with great gentleness (a Labrador can carry an egg in its mouth without breaking it). They are known to have a very soft feel to the mouth, as a result of being bred to retrieve game such as waterfowl. They are prone to chewing objects...

Labradors often enjoy retrieving a ball endlessly (often obsessively)... Labradors have a well-known reputation for appetite, and some individuals may be highly indiscriminate, eating digestible and non-food objects alike. They are persistent and persuasive in requesting food...

They are a very intelligent breed. They are ranked # 7 in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs... Labradors as a breed are curious, exploratory and love company, following both people and interesting scents for food, attention and novelty value. In this way, they can often "vanish" or otherwise become separated from their owners with little fanfare.

Domino theory. And practice.

A four-minute video (a "screenlink" comprised of separate events, not a continuous domino fall) illustrates some of the remarkable effects that can be achieved using falling dominos.

An expert female manipulator

The comment thread at BoingBoing indicates that this may or may not be Suzy Wandas ("the lady with the fairy fingers"), who was "reputed to be one of the half-dozen best manipulators in the history of magic."

¿Bailamos? ("Shall we dance?")

I hope the English subtitles will turn on automatically (if not, use the "cc" button in the bottom menu bar).
The purpose of this video is to remind parents immersed in a cultural dynamic of work and consumption, that children are children, and they have to play and enjoy their childhood.

"Lucha Libro" explained

From a story at PRI:
It's a twist on Lucha Libre, Mexico’s version of pro wrestling, where competitors put on masks and pseudonyms to duke it out in a ring.

Peru's Lucha Libro is kind of like that, without the violence. It's literary "wrestling." New writers don masks, and head onto a stage where they’re given three random words, a laptop hooked up to a gigantic screen, and five minutes to write a short story.

At the end of a match, the losing writer has to take off his or her mask. The winner goes on to the next round, a week later. And the grand prize? It's a book contract...

The first contestant is a guy who goes by the name "Chicken Wilson." He's tall and goofy, but when he sees the three words projected on the screen behind him, he gets serious. He's got monkey, plane ticket, and dictionary to work with.

The announcer counts to three, and the clock starts. No one's talking, but just a paragraph in, Chicken Wilson freezes. The seconds are ticking by, so the crowd starts cheering him on. He rallies, dashing off a short story about monkeys living in the city, and an American girl on vacation in Peru...

It's also about changing the idea that literature is boring. This turns it into an event. Because it's not just about the opportunity for a young person to become a writer,” he says. “It's also about having a place for young people to hang out - and to read.”
It seems to me the way to game the system would be to have three or four stories already "written" in one's mind, and then figure out into which one you could insert the three words.  Kudos to the promoters for developing the event.

Cheerleading has evolved

It seems to have incorporated Olympic (and video game) moves.  These are not without hazard, as Miss Cellania notes in her Neatorama post:
You are about to watch young men and women perform stunts that were once only seen in circuses. This is a music video from CheerSounds, a company that produces custom music for cheerleading squads, with video recorded at StuntFest 2013. The song is called "Decitona."

Oh, these gymnasts are impressive, but also frightening from a parent's perspective. A recent study in the Journal of Pediatrics confirmed a trend that cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for female Americans. So I feel I must say, "Don't try this at home." You have to wonder about the stunts that didn't make the cut.
Those who enjoy watching youngsters getting hurt can search YouTube for cheerleading +  injury.

The value of a dashcam

Dashcams are very popular in Russia because they provide documentation of faked accidents and injuries - as for example those created by the pedestrians in this supercut.

One note from the BoingBoing via: "Unfortunately someone really does get run over, so don't watch this if you think you might be disturbed."

Teaser for "Hug an Atheist"

Excerpts from an article at Sojourners:
Some outside the atheist community — and even many inside it — would argue that atheism has an image problem. Every challenge to the First Amendment seems to bring to the airwaves some version of an angry atheist versus a sputtering religious pundit. Cooler, calmer heads seldom make an appearance.

Now, a new feature-length documentary from a first-time filmmaker hopes to put a more human, middle-of-the-road face on American atheism... The 90-minute film is the project of Sylvia Broeckx, a 35-year-old Belgian who lives in England and has been an atheist and humanist since her teens. She became interested in America’s perception of nonbelievers when some American friends and fellow atheists shared their own stories of feeling marginalized.

“I always assumed America was founded on freedom of religion and was very much like Europe where if you are an atheist it is no big deal,” she said. “When I discovered that in America being an atheist could be a big problem, that was really a shock to me.”

She was especially upset by the stories of Jessica Ahlquist and Damon Fowler, two teenage atheists who challenged prayer in their public schools. Ahlquist, a Rhode Island high schooler, received death threats and was belittled by local government officials, and Fowler’s family kicked him out of their Louisiana home before his high school graduation...

What is not included is any sort of diatribe or argument against religious belief or believers that’s become the common currency of the most visible atheist activists.
“I really wanted to make sure it was as upbeat as possible and that it really wasn’t a case of ‘us’ against ‘them,’” Broeckx said.

Advances in logrolling

Meet Wisconsinite Abby Hoeschler, who is the boom running world record holder.
“I’m the current boom running world champion and world record holder. There are two events: In logrolling, you’re trying to dislodge your competitor from the log (or just be the last one on the log) in a three-out-of-five-round match. In boom running, a course of eight logs tied end to end is attached to two docks, and you sprint across and back. The fastest time wins.”

“It uses a lot of core ... and a lot of butt, because you’re in the squat position — really digging in. It’s kind of like chair pose in yoga. You keep your shoulders up, with a strong core. It’s an all-body workout."
More about her and the sport in the StarTribune.  In the video she is promoting a synthetic log she developed and is marketing to help popularize (and standardize) the sport.  To overcome the logistic problem of transporting 500-pound logs, the synthetic ones are hollow, made of polyethylene, then filled with water at the site of use to bring them up to mass.

Here's a video of the women's  boom-running competition at the Lumberjack World Championships. And this one of the finals of the men's logrolling competition in 2011:

The "Dancing Bus Stop Lady" will have an opportunity to go on stage

She became Hampshire’s online dancing sensation after a video of her bus stop boogie went viral. Now Ellie Cole is swapping the bus stop for the stage, treading the boards in a professional production.

The 35-year-old, from Southampton has been invited to take part in the performance of the play Ah Men at The Point Theatre in Eastleigh this weekend after the writer saw her video...

Ellie studied performing arts for a year at Eastleigh College, but had to drop out after she lost her job and could not afford it.

She said this was a chance to fulfil her stage ambitions. “It’s very flattering and humbling,” said Ellie, who attended rehearsals in London last week...

Alongside her role in the actual show tomorrow, Ellie will also be performing with other cast members in an extract from the show being put on at the Leigh Road Recreation Ground as the finale to the Eastleigh Mardi Gras procession today. The plan is to get people up and dancing afterwards to Dancing Queen, in tribute to the backing track on her memorable video.

Ellie said: “I’m just a normal everyday person who happened to like dancing at bus stops.  Still to this day I find it hard to believe this has all happened. It’s like ‘wow, why me?’.”

"All expenses paid"

An achingly evocative video posted by Miss Cellania at Neatorama, where a commenter noted that the 792,000 thai bahts are equivalent to about 25,000 USD or 19,000 EUR or 16,000 GBP.

It's also a reminder that the financial problems contingent on life support and major medical catastrophes are not limited to the United States.

"Catalan Way" on the National Day of Catalonia (9/11)

Catalan Way, also known as The Catalan Way towards Independence, was a 400-kilometre (250 mi) human chain in support of Catalan independence. It was organized by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), and took place in Catalonia on 11 September 2013, which is the National Day of Catalonia. Catalonia's Department of the Interior estimated the number of participants at about 1.6 million.
The protest was supported by 14 nongovernmental groups. The human chain followed the ancient Via Augusta, from El Pertús (Vallespir) up to Alcanar (Montsià). According to Carme Forcadell, president of the ANC, it was "a symbol of the unity of Catalan people to achieve national sovereignty"...
Further details at the Wikipedia link.  There are an abundance of relevant videos at YouTube;  I thought the one embedded at the top was the best.  This was a promotional video:

And this one focuses on the activities around the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona:

I suspect my cousin Karl is in one of those human chains.
