"Carmina Burana" flash mob

I'm not back (yet) - still on blogcation.  But I can't resist a flash mob.  As explained by Mademoiselle Titam at her Curiosities blog:
"En avril 2012, les solistes, le chœur et orchestre du Volksoper Wien (l’opéra populaire de Vienne, Autriche) a réalisé une flashmob dans la gare de Vienne. Devant des passants et voyageurs aux yeux ébahis, ce sont d’autres passants, employés, qui deviennent peu à peu artistes…"

World's tallest falling domino structure

From Austrian Domino Art, via Neatorama, where it is noted that five months of preparation and four days of setup went into this stunt. One wonders how many times the 6-meter-tall structure was accidentally toppled during construction.

There should be more stuff like this in the world.

A tribute at a funeral

Excerpts from an article in Runner's World:
This powerful photo says so much about Jim Kelley, and it says even more about running.

My friend Jim died this month while out on a run, doing one of his favorite things in the world. A car struck him as he was crossing the street.

Jim was amazing and selfless. He placed in the top three in his age group 90 percent of the time. He loved to run, more than anybody I know, whether by himself or supporting others...

Jim wasn't a dressy guy. He loved jeans and T-shirts. Teri, Jim’s wife of more than 30 years, told everybody to come to his funeral dressed in their running clothes. That's how Jim would be buried, she said. Come in your tights and your running shorts. Wear your running shoes.

I was one of Jim’s pallbearers. When it was time to go to the cemetery, the funeral director had this idea. The cemetery was only a mile away, he said to us. Instead of vehicles following behind, would we want to honor Jim by running behind the hearse?

It was a genius idea.
The rest of the story is at the link.

The doorstop always wins

A compilation of puppies battling doorstops.  I also found it interesting that in two instances the doorstops were mounted on the doors rather than on the wall; I wonder if in some situations there is a practical or design advantage to that arrangement?

First prize at Corso Zundert, 2012

Bloemencorso Zundert is the largest flower parade in the world entirely made by volunteers. The parade takes place on the first Sunday of September. The floats are large artworks made of steel wire, cardboard, papier-mâché and flowers. In the Bloemencorso Zundert, only dahlias are used to decorate the objects and it takes thousands of them just to cover one float.

The huge floats are made by twenty different hamlets and each of them consists of hundreds of builders... A professional and independent jury decides which float is the most beautiful and which hamlet will be crowned the winner of that year.
There are more photos and videos at the festival's website, including this one -

And I found this impressive one at the Wikipedia entry:

Wow.  And unlike many parades in America, these floats don't appear to be sponsored by corporations and designed to sell products.

The "Dancing Bus Stop Lady" will have an opportunity to go on stage

She became Hampshire’s online dancing sensation after a video of her bus stop boogie went viral. Now Ellie Cole is swapping the bus stop for the stage, treading the boards in a professional production.

The 35-year-old, from Southampton has been invited to take part in the performance of the play Ah Men at The Point Theatre in Eastleigh this weekend after the writer saw her video...

Ellie studied performing arts for a year at Eastleigh College, but had to drop out after she lost her job and could not afford it.

She said this was a chance to fulfil her stage ambitions. “It’s very flattering and humbling,” said Ellie, who attended rehearsals in London last week...

Alongside her role in the actual show tomorrow, Ellie will also be performing with other cast members in an extract from the show being put on at the Leigh Road Recreation Ground as the finale to the Eastleigh Mardi Gras procession today. The plan is to get people up and dancing afterwards to Dancing Queen, in tribute to the backing track on her memorable video.

Ellie said: “I’m just a normal everyday person who happened to like dancing at bus stops.  Still to this day I find it hard to believe this has all happened. It’s like ‘wow, why me?’.”

Piggyback. Or would that be "bear-back" ?

"A polar bear cub hitches a piggy-back ride on its mother as they swim through the Arctic Ocean in Svalbard, Norway"  Picture: Kevin Schafer / Barcroft USA
A Picture of the Day from the Telegraph back in 2012.

Now I'm wondering about the etymology of "piggyback."  Did it have anything to do with pigs?  No time to look it up now.  Perhaps someone knows, or can look it up and report back to the class tomorrow.

Indirectly via a little bit of this, a lttle bit of that, a little more of...

Enjoy watching dominos fall? Got ten minutes?

It took 12 people eight days to set up 277,275 dominoes. Last Friday, 272,297 of them were toppled at Wilhelm-Lückert Gym in Büdingen, Germany at the Sinners Domino Entertainment event.

World record domino chain (of books)

It took a total of seven hours of setup and five tries, but at around 11 p.m. Friday, May 31, The Seattle Public Library set the world’s record for the longest book domino chain.
2,131 books - although it seems like more in the video.  Via Neatorama.

Meanwhile, in a Netherlands shopping mall...

The slogan 'Our Heroes are Back' is used to announce that, after an absence of one decade, all major pieces in the Rijksmuseum's collection are back where they belong.  (The Flashmob recreates Rembrandt's Night Watch).  (p.s. - high res - good for fullscreen viewing)

Joy

Found at imgur (p.s. - discovered this week that it's pronounced "imager").

And GIF is pronounced "jif" (according to its creator):
He is proud of the GIF, but remains annoyed that there is still any debate over the pronunciation of the format. “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Mr. Wilhite said. “They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.”
The counterargument is presented at Sentence First:
I’ve written about the pronunciation of GIF before, but a lot of people are still confused about it. There’s no need to be. Wilhite may have invented the GIF but he can’t decide its pronunciation for everyone. Each of us gets to choose how we say a new word, and most people say GIF with a hard g – unsurprisingly, given the sound’s dominance in English words containing the letter. Language being democratic, hard-g /gɪf/ is therefore the dominant usage. But “jif” is a significant variant, equally standard and clearly preferred by some communities...

In the meantime, you don’t have to adopt the inventor’s preference. He did us a great technical service, but he’s not the boss of English. You’re the boss of your own English. GIF is in the public domain: say it any way you want.

Cheerful Russian dashcam footage

Compilations of dashcam videos from Russian drivers are famous for their depiction of horrendous accidents, gore and carnage.  This 5-minute video shows the converse - people being nice to one another and to animals at risk.

Viewing this will probably bring a couple tears of happiness to your eyes...

Introducing Operation Smile

As I wander widely on the 'net, I encounter a lot of charitable foundations.  I'm rather choosy about which ones I donate to, but Operation Smile has been one that I have been gratified to donate to.  Years ago I saw a long video about them, which I thought I had blogged but cannot now locate.  The three-minute one above will provide a brief introduction for those unfamiliar with Operation Smile.

Pianists at play

The video above shows eight pianists sharing just two pianos; seven of them are previous winners of the Dublin International Piano Competition.

The one below has twelve pianists playing just one piano.
This performance has hold the world record for the most pianists performing simultaneously on one piano."

This video is emblematic of spring

The video shows cows being released from winter confinement to graze outdoors on the Beemster polder for the first time.
Beemster Graskaas is a rare, extra smooth cheese made in April from the first milking of the cows as they leave the barn for the first time after the cold, windy winter. The milk taken during the first weeks of Spring is the creamiest and is used to create a special edition cheese to be released at the Spring Cheese Festival.
