Tensegrity Wind Turbine

Hugh Thomson posted a CAD diagram of a tensegrity wind turbine atop a Skylon-like pedestal. I think his deployment of membranes on a tensegrity is a very promising direction, and thank him for sharing the simple and beautiful rendering, reproduced here.

Tensegrity fans often work with alternative energy. Marjetica Potrc, for example, made sure to include a wind turbine near her tensegrity-shack. In her "Burning Man: Tensegrity Structure and Waterboy" she wrote,

s a solar canopy and a wind turbine, which power the water pump that serves the Waterboy, designed by Marque Cornblatt for the Burning Man Festival.

Oobject hosts a list of the most beautiful wind turbines, many of which deploy tensile technologies, though not purely tensegrities. Notable is the sea anchored blimp, pictured here. They wrote, "Selsam created a proposal for giant fields of fishing rod like turbines anchored on the sea bed and flexed against the wind. This proposal goes one step further to imagine the rod structures being held aloft by blimps."
Hats off to Thomson--while his model is clearly not fully functional, this direction of tensional, tensegrity sturctures with membranes, may hold a lot of promise. Contact him and please offer him suggestions: "hught2008" on gmail.com.
